Car Seat Check-Up Clinics

FREE MONTHLY CAR SEAT CHECK-UP CLINICS

According to a 2002 National SAFE Kids study, 8 out of 10 car seats are misused, with an average of three errors per seat. Common types of misuse range from using recalled and unrepaired car seats, children are either too small or too large for their seat, or improper installation of the seat in the vehicle. Unfortunately, the consequences of misuse can sometimes be death or serious injury.

In order to decrease car seat misuse, the Klickitat County Health Department is offering FREE help for parents and caregivers who have questions about car seat safety and installations. Beginning in September, the health department will conduct car seat check-up clinics by appointment. Please call and schedule an appointment.

Car seat check-up clinics are opportunities for one-on-one guidance on proper car seat use. Bring your vehicle (and owner's manual), car seat (and instruction manual) and child and be prepared to participate in the check-up process. Expectant parents and other caregivers are encouraged to attend as well.

Other car seat safety tips:

Never buy used car seats from garage/yard sales or an unknown source. If you do not know the history of the car seat, don't use it. It could have missing parts or may have been damaged, making the seat unsafe for use.

Do not use car seats that are more than six years old.

Never place a rear facing seat in front of an airbag.

All children 13 and under should ride in the backseat.

Washington State's Child Passenger Safety Law requires that all children up to their 8th birthday (unless they are 4'9" or 57") be transported in a child restraint system (child car seat, booster seat) and that the restraint system be used according to the car seat and vehicle manufacturer's instructions.
