Snow Plowing Policy

STATEMENT OF COUNTY ROAD SERVICES DURING SNOW EVENTS

As the winter season approaches, and snow is sure to come, it is important to know that a key element of life in Klickitat County is self-reliance. It is important to understand that rural Klickitat County is not always able to provide the same level of service as more urban counties and cities. So you can be properly prepared for the next snowstorm, the following lists the level of service provided by the County:

- All County roads, except primitive roads, will be plowed within two days of a snow event.

- Paved roads are higher priority than gravel roads and will be plowed in order of their classification. Bus routes, on gravel roads, are higher priority than other gravel roads.

- During a long-term snow event, some higher classified roads may be plowed several times before secondary roads receive attention. It is our intention to provide roads clear enough for four-wheel drive and front wheel drive vehicles, with chains, to travel during snow events.

- Primitive roads will only be plowed after all other roads are clear.

- Unless parked vehicles are moved from the road, narrow streets may not be plowed at all. Removing cars off the streets is essential in small communities like Klickitat and Lyle.

- State law prohibits maintaining or plowing private roads by County forces.

- School buses and other types of delivery vehicles may not be able to travel during snow events.

- Snowplows will place berms across driveways and in front of mailboxes. You will be responsible for keeping your driveway and mailboxes clear.

- Sanding material, for added traction, will be placed on paved roads only.

As a community service, we request any volunteer or fund-raising group, which offers snow removal, provide us with their contact information so we can forward your services to individuals with snow removal hardships.

For further information, please call the Klickitat County Public Works Department at (509) 773-4616, or, 1 (800) 583-8074. We appreciate your support in keeping our snow plow service costs affordable to make more money available for our permanent road improvement projects.
