Rock Creek Tire Cleanup:

5,000 tires were removed from the head waters of Rock Creek through a cooperative effort between the current owner of the property (not the person who put the tires on the property), nine concerned neighbors, nine volunteers from the Trout Lake AmeriCorps Service Academy and Klickitat County Health Department with assistance from Solid Waste. The tires represented a direct threat to the health of Rock Creek, a spawning stream for an endangered species of steelhead.

Cleanup of 5,000 tires took three days. 18 people, using 5 donated vehicles, transported the tires from the bottom of the canyon to semi-truck containers at the top of the hill. The tires were shipped to a Portland area tire recycler. The owner of the property absorbed the cost of proper disposition of the tires.

The tires weigh from 25 to 125 pounds each. We estimate 150,000 pounds of tires were moved during the three days of the volunteer effort. A common goal, well executed team work and perfect weather contributed to a successful cleanup.
